Here’s a list of 28 cat breeds with their names starting from the letter “C”. This group contains some of the most famous cat breeds including the Coon Cat, the Cornish Rex, the Canadian Hairless, the Chartreux, the Colorpoint Shorthair, the Chinese Li Hua, the Colorpoint Longhair and others.

1. The California Spangled or The Spangled
This shorthair, hypoallergenic cat breed from the United States comes under the category of large cats (10-15 pounds). Its body has color spots, making it look like a small leopard. The coat color can be bronze, blue, gold, brown, red charcoal, black, silver, or white. Despite their wild looks, these cats are very friendly, intelligent, curious, loyal and quiet. They are also good with other pets and children. They are generally healthy and require low maintenance.
2. The Canaan Cat or The Kanaani
The Kanaani, an experimental shorthair cat breed from Germany, is a domestic cat hybrid that looks like spotted wild cats from Africa. The ticked coat of the Kanaani has spots of different colors, including black, cinnamon and chocolate colors. These cats have large ears with lynx tips and a long, slender neck. They have large, muscular body with longer hind legs and long, thin tail. The eye color ranges from yellow to green.
3. The Canadian Hairless, The Sphynx or The Canadian Sphynx
9th on the popularity list of Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), Sphynx from Canada is one of the best domestic cat breeds and arguably the best hairless cat breed. This medium-sized (6-12 pounds) cat comes in more than 7 different colors. It is very loyal, friendly, quiet and gentle. Also, it is very affectionate, adaptable, child-friendly and pet-friendly. Generally healthy, this cat shows minimal shedding and requires less grooming. It is also hypoallergenic.
4. The Caracat
The Caracat is a hybrid, a cross between the Abyssinian and the Caracal (a wildcat from Africa). The Caracat has dark “mustache” and a small cougar-like, non-spotted coat in brown color. It is a very large cat and may grow up to 20-25 pounds. Second generation Caracats are much more suitable as a house pet as compared to the first generation. They are very loyal, energetic and interactive.
5. The Cashmere, The Pardino or The Cashmere Bengals
The Cashmere Cat is the longhair version of the Bengal Cat. Other than having a longhair coat, it is identical to the Bengal cat in its appearance and qualities. These cats have a long silky coat and are very rare. They are available in almost every color and different combinations. The interesting thing is, they don’t need much grooming despite having long hair because their hair is very fine, soft and silky. These are bred internationally in the United States, the United Kingdome, and Europe.
6. The Celtic Shorthair or The European Shorthair
The European Shorthair originates from Finland and Sweden and comes in 58 different color varieties. This shorthair breed has been used to develop different other cat breeds such as the Chartreux and the Norwegian Forest Cat etc. It is a good indoor as wells as an outdoor cat. European Shorthair cats are strong, active friendly, intelligent and playful. These cats are famous for their great variety of appearance as well as temperament.
7. The Ceylon, The Celonese or The Manila
Originally from Ceylon Island of Sri Lanka, this relatively new cat breed is now bred in Italy. Well known in Italy, these cats have a characteristic “sleepy” look. They come in different colors, with a golden to sunlight contrast on head, legs, and tail. These small-medium sized cats are very active, friendly, peaceful and quiet. They have shorthair coat and strong body. This breed is recognized by World Cat Federation (WCF).
8. The Chantilly-Tiffany, The Chantilly or The Foreign Longhair
This medium sized (7-12 pounds) breed from the United States has a silky longhair coat. It is developed by a cross between the Burmese and the Long-haired Asian cats. These cats are very popular as they are moderately active: neither too active nor too lazy. They are very interactive, friendly and loyal as well as child-friendly and pet-friendly. They come in various colors. Cats of this breed are generally very healthy and energetic. The cherry on the cake: they are hypoallergenic.
9. The Chartreux
The Chartreux is a medium-large (6-15 pounds) muscular breed from France, with short and resilient hair coat. It is one of the few breeds, which are truly “blue” in color. These cats are very intelligent, friendly, loyal and quiet. They are also very friendly to children and other pets. Cats of this breed do not get sick very often. They have average grooming & maintenance requirements. They undergo moderate shedding. This breed is 28th most popular breed by the CFA.
10. The Chausie
Originating from Egypt, the Chausie breed of cats is developed by a cross between a Domestic cat and the Asian Jungle cats. 3rd-4th generation Chausie cats are medium-large (7-15 pounds) shorthair domestic cats, that come in different colors and patterns, including black, brown and silver. They are intelligent, social, quiet, pet-friendly and child-friendly. These cats love to play and are mostly considered “one-man cats”.
11. The Cheetoh
Medium-large (8-15 pounds) cat breed from the United States, the Cheetoh is a Bengal x Ocicat hybrid, with very wild looks and glossy, shorthair coat. It comes in various colors like the Ocicat. Despite their wild appearance, Cheetoh cats are very gentle, intelligent, social and affectionate. They are very adaptable, pet-friendly and child-friendly. These cats are generally healthy and require low maintenance. They are hypoallergenic and undergo minimal shedding.
12. The Chinchilla Longhair and The Sterling
Registered by the Southern Africa Cat Council (SACC), Chinchilla Longhair cats are actually the Persian cats with chinchilla-shaded or silver-shaded golden longhair coat. In Africa, these cats are developed as a separate breed. Cats of this breed have a longer nose as compared to the Persian cat, leading to less tearing and healthy respiration. They have translucent hair with blackish tips. Eye colors are blue or blue-purple in kittens and blue-green or green in adults.
13. The Chinese Harlequin
Recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA), the Chinese Harlequin is one of the rarest cat breeds. Originating from China, this is a domestic cat breed that comes in shorthair coat. Their color pattern is Van, just like the Turkish Van. In this pattern, the body color of the cat is white, with black tail and markings on the head and body. It is said that this breed has been developed to recreate previously lost Chinese Cat, an ancient domestic breed from China.
14. The Chinese Li Hua, The Dragon Li, The Li Hua Mau, The Li Mao or The Fox Flower Cat
The Dragon Li is a relatively new cat breed from China, with a medium-sized body and shorthair coat. It is considered one of the most intelligent and interactive cat breeds. This cat comes mostly in golden-brown color, with almond-shaped yellow-green eyes. It is believed that these cats originated from the wild Chinese Mountain Cat. This breed is recognized by the CFA and China’s Cat Aficionado Association (CAA). It’s the CFA’s 42nd most popular breed.
15. The Classic Persian, The Persian (Traditional), The Doll Face Persian, The Old-Fashioned Persian, The Long-nosed Persian, The Old-style Longhair, The Traditional Longhair or The Original Longhair
“Traditional Persian” is the name used for the original breed of the Persian cats from Iran, without the development of their extreme features. As the breeding standards change over time, the Persian cats develop Flat Faces over time due to some genetic mutations. But the Traditional Persian is still being bred separately. Some of the major cat registries recognize them as a separate breed, while others consider them a variety of the Persian breed.
16. The Classic Siamese, The Traditional Siamese, The Applehead, The Thai, The Thai Siamese or The Whichian Mat
Thai is an old natural cat breed from Thailand, related to (but distinct from) modern Siamese cat. Recognized by TICA, the Thai breed has rounder eyes, face, and body with normal-sized ears in contrast to almond-shaped eyes, thin face, thin body, and large ears of modern Siamese. While in body color patterns and temperament, it is very much similar to the Siamese. They are outgoing, people-loving and vocal.
17. The Colorpoint Persian, The Himalayan, The Colorpoint Longhair or The Himmy
A cross between the Persian and the Siamese, this medium-large (7-14 pounds) cat breed originates from the USA, Nepal, and UK. These cats have very soft and brushy longhair coat. They are very friendly, gentle, intelligent, quiet and social. They come in more than 8 colors. This is one of the most popular longhair cat breeds. They have a Persian-like body. As they grow, they become color-point (not at birth). Cats of this breed are not recommended to stay in a home with small children.
18. The Colorpoint Shorthair
This medium-sized (4-10 pounds) shorthair cat breed of United States was developed by crossing the Siamese to the red American Shorthair, while they were trying to produce a red-colored Siamese. This 30th most popular cat breed is almost identical to the Siamese apart from point colors. These cats are very intelligent, playful and social. They are low maintenance and undergo minimal shedding. They come in more than 16 colors and can produce over 100 different kinds of voices.
19. The Coon Cat, The American Longhair, The Maine Coon, The Maine Cat, The Maine Trick Cat, The Maine Shag, The Snowshoe Cat, The Gentle Giant or The Yankee Cat
The 3rd most popular breed after the Exotic Shorthair and the Persian, the Maine Coon is one of the largest (12-18 pounds) cat breeds from the United States. It has a long body with heavy and silky longhair coat. Cats of this breed have coats of all colors and patterns, except the Siamese pointed coat. Most common pattern is patched brown. It is very adaptable, intelligent, gentle and independent. In addition to that, it is extremely good with children and other pets. These qualities make it one of the best indoor cats.
20. The Copper, The Suphalak, The Supilak, The Thai Copper or The Thong Daeng
Originating from Thailand, Suphalak is a natural cat breed with a solid reddish-brown copper color and shorthair coat. The name “Suphalak” means “red gold”. This cat breed is, sometimes, considered from the ancestors of Burmese or Tonkinese. Cats of this breed have a medium-sized, muscular breed have a semi-foreign type body. They have bright yellow-gold colored eyes. These cats are affectionate, intelligent and playful, as well as active and communicative.
21. The Cornish Rex
Cornish Rex, the 13th most popular domestic cat breed from the USA, is a small-medium (5-9 pounds) cat with a curly, extremely soft and shiny shorthair coat. In addition to being one of the best hypoallergenic cat breeds, it is highly intelligent, active, playful, curious and affectionate. The Cornish Rex comes in a large variety of colors. It is very adaptable and quiet, as well as good with children and other pets. Cats of this breed are generally healthy and they undergo minimum shedding. Grooming requirements are low.
22. The Coupari, The Scottish Fold Longhair, The Longhair Fold or The Highland Fold
Originating from the United Kingdom, this breed is the longhair version of the Scottish Fold, recognized as a separate breed by TICA. Medium-sized cats of this breed look like a “wise owl” due to their short nose, full cheek, large rounded eyes, and sweet expression. Its soft and resilient longhair coat comes in different colors and patterns. Coupari cats are very friendly and playful, and also good with children and other pets. They need regular grooming.
23. The Cuban Blue or The Azul Cubano
This is a relatively very new breed of Cuba, only recognized by the Associación Cubana de Aficionados a los Gatos (AcaG) in 2010. It comes in blue-gray color and resembles Russian Blue. It is very active, playful and friendly. The Cuban Blue comes in both shorthair and semi-longhair varieties. It is a medium-sized (6-10 pounds) breed. It is believed that the variety originated from uncontrolled mating between the traditional Siamese and black street cats.
24. The Cubbari or The Cub Cat
This small-medium sized (5-8 pounds), semi-shorthair breed is relatively new and still under development. They aimed for a cat, that looks like a big (wild) cat cub. With innocent expressions and loving personality, these cats look very cute. They are very friendly, active and social. Munchkin, Bengal, and British Shorthairs have been used in the development of the Cub Cat. It comes in different colors and patterns, including snow, golden, brown and black. This breed is recognized by TICA.
25. The Curilsk, The Kurilian Bobtail, The Kuril Bobtail or The Kuril Islands Bobtail
Originating from Russia and Japan, the Kurilian Bobtail comes in both longhair and shorthair varieties, with semi-cobby body type. Just like the Japanese Bobtail, it has a distinct short and fluffy “bob” or “pompon” tail. These cats are very clever but gentle. They love playing with water. Cats of this breed are large (15-19 pounds) in size and have longer hind legs. They are highly sociable. This breed is recognized by the TICA, but not by the CFA.
26. The Cymric or The Manx Longhair
Originating from the Isle of Man in the UK, this cat breed is considered to be the semi-longhair version of the Manx Cat. Cats of this breed are tailless, with medium-large (8-13 pounds), muscular body and semi-longhair coat. They come in a variety of colors and combinations. These cats are very intelligent, loyal, playful and gentle. They are also good with children and other pets. Generally healthy, these cats require moderate maintenance. This is a hypoallergenic breed.
27. The Cyprus, The Cypriot Cat, The Cyprus Aphrodite or The Aphrodite’s Giant Cat
With a medium-longhair coat, Cyprus is one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Originating from the Cyprus Island, this breed is very adaptable to extreme temperatures, with shorter hair coats in summer. They have olive-shaped eyes in a variety of colors. They are very friendly and social and comes in almost all colors (with some exceptions). Despite their large size, these cats are good with children and other pets.
28. The Czech Curly Cat, The Bohemian Rex, The Bohemia Rex or The Tsjechian
This cat breed has a traditional Persian-like body with lush, curly longhair coat. The Bohemian Rex originates from the Czech Republic. This Rex cat is relatively new and less known. It is thought that it comes from a cross between the Persian and the German Rex. These animals are curious, kind and gentle. They are very friendly to children and other pets. They need extra grooming for their curly hair coat.
