7 Must-see attractions for crazy cat-couples

Editor’s Note:

This article originally ran on YourTango, a digital media company dedicated to love and relationships that sometimes delves into cat territory.

If you’re anything like me (and I do mean anything), you think cats are just about the best thing in the world. Call me a crazy cat lady if you like — it would probably be more than a little accurate — but I think felines are absolutely wonderful, and I almost always seem to get along great with anybody who thinks the same.

So, if you’re like me and tend to date like-minded cat lovers, now’s the time to try one of these creative spots for the perfect romantic getaway.

1. The Stray Cat Cafe

With feline decor and a complete menu full of puns (Cats-a-dillas, anyone?), this cafe is a guaranteed good time. But this Arlington, VA, spot is more than a cat-themed restaurant- together with the Lost Dog Caf├®, it supports the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation, an organization that rescues and places hundreds of animals every year. Is there a spot more worthy of a toast on a romantic date between cat lovers?

2. Sanrio Stores

Love all things Hello Kitty-related? This store features the illustrated favorite right on the outside! You and your date can check out all manner of merchandise, so if you’re feeling your inner kid excitement arise, you can snag cute gifts for one another.

3. The Cat Museum of San Francisco

While this organization founded by cat lovers has not yet established a permanent facility, they regularly set up exhibitions for the public to check out — perfect for a couple who enjoys both cats and history. If you and your date want to know more about felines from long ago, this is an excellent option.

4. International Cat Video Film Festival

First of all: yes, this is a real thing. Originally started in Minnesota, the International Cat Video Film Festival sifts through thousands of submissions to find the best of the best in awesome feline films. This October, it arrives in Brooklyn, so NYC residents and visitors can take a date to some fancy premieres for these shorts.

5. Volunteer at a shelter (ASPCA, among others)

If you’ve never volunteered with another person (or even at all), you may be surprised at how fun it can be. Animal lovers with big hearts can help shelters by collecting donations, giving supplies, cleaning, playing with animals and more. It’s a beautifully productive thing to do while you still manage to spend lots of quality time with your SO.

6. Take a cat-friendly vacation

Already got a favorite feline in your lives that you just can’t bear to be without? Check out a pet-friendly hotel search engine like Pets Welcome to determine where the best spots are to take your cat with you so all three of you can travel together without you or your partner worrying about your cat’s wellbeing while you’re away.

7. Meet the Algonquin Cat

Ever heard of the famed NYC Algonquin Hotel? This century-old establishment has put a roof over the heads of brilliant people like William Faulkner and Maya Angelou. But who’s its biggest pride? Matilda the cat. In the 1930s, “a rather disheveled feline wandered into the hotel searching for food and shelter,” so the staff gave her a home. Now, there’s always a Matilda wandering the halls of this legendary hotel.
