The 12 cats of christmas: wasabi-chan

For “the 12 Cats of Christmas,” each day we pluck one notable furball who has made a huge and lasting impression on our hearts over the last 12 months and revisit his or her story. Consider it your daily festive feline gift.

Today we remember the story of …

2. Wasabi-Chan

We reported how Wasabi-Chan burst onto the scene while wearing a miniature mushroom costume back in July. The reason for the kitten’s knitted outfit was part of a handmade recovery process designed to put her on the mend after she was attacked by what we still like to think is the world’s meanest crow. Wasabi-Chan’s outfits — which also included a pink contraption — were designed to help feed her through a tube.

Unfortunately, despite becoming an overnight Internet phenomenon, the story of Wasabi-Chan has a heart-wrenching ending as she passed away in August of this year.

While living at her home in Hokkaido, Japan, the three-month-old Wasabi-Chan seemed to enjoy spending her time with a Golden Retriever friend, and also showed that she was not one to bear grudges as she moseyed up close to another (non-attacking) bird.
