6 Cat behaviors i would like to have for a day
As humans, we’re usually expected to adhere to social norms with regard to our behavior. Most of us learned proper manners, and even if we don’t enjoy a particular situation, know how to politely smile and express our real feelings after the fact.
Cats know nothing of social mores and pretty much live out loud. We humans are rarely left guessing at what they’re feeling, and they couldn’t care less.
I think it would be liberating — just for a day — to adopt some of my cats’ bold behaviors. Sure, I’d probably get some interesting looks from some of them, but here are six I’d like to try.
1. Aloofness
Bored with you.
If cats don’t feel like doing something, they’re not going to do it. Period. We often find ourselves trudging through a boring work project or counting the minutes until the end of a bad date. Cats, however, have no trouble ignoring people or avoiding undesirable activities. Can you imagine being completely aloof and having no major consequences? I can — and you can, too.
2. Sleepiness
Yes, please.
“Oh, sleep — why must you elude me so?” … said no cat ever. This is, however, is what I ask most every night. You see, I can fall asleep — it’s just that if I wake up during the night, it’s incredibly difficult for me to return to peaceful slumber. And I’m a light sleeper. Yay, me. Please, let me have the sleepiness of a cat. That must feel crazy good.
3. Curiosity
Any snacks in there?
I’m naturally curious, but because of politeness, don’t always explore that curiosity. Cats are not all that polite — am I right? If a purse is open, they’re gonna nose around inside of it. If a drawer is open, they’re all over it. Sometimes I wonder what people carry in their bags. Occasionally I avoid asking really personal questions. I don’t want to be rude, but let me be super curious for a few hours and not offend anybody. Please?
4. Intense Adoration
I want to huuug you!
Sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed with happy feelings for someone and want to cuddle up with them — but not in a creepy way. I’m an affectionate person and love to give and receive hugs. I find that some people don’t appreciate my hugs because they just aren’t natural “I love to be touched” people, and I respect that. But there’s nothing like sharing a hug with another enthusiastic hugger.
Cats don’t restrain themselves when they want to show someone they like them. They rub against their legs, curl up in their lap, and purr like crazy. I want to curl up with someone when I really like them. Most people wouldn’t respond well to that behavior. I would, however, invade personal boundaries if I could. Just for a day, people — just for a day.
5. Playfulness
This bird looks relevant to my interests.
I need to incorporate play time into my day. I tend to be a workaholic, and sometimes feel guilty when I take time out to do something fun. I know, I know — it’s not healthy, and I’m working on it. “Working” … ha ha. I’d love a day of pure play, with no guilt. Cats have loads of free time, play whenever they like, and experience zero guilt. I know some people can do this with no problem, but for now, it’s my feline wish to be completely playful for just a day, and I’ll go from there.
6. Crankiness
Look out, Grumpy Cat.
I think I’m a nice person, but occasionally cut loose with some cranky behavior. I think we all do, and our friends and loved ones usually understand. I can typically smile through situations that give me cranky pants, but when I’m excessively tired or overstimulated, crankiness can take overshadow my sunny disposition. If I were a cat, I wouldn’t have to smile through anything. I could be fussy and people wouldn’t think twice about my mood. My cranky pants would have a perfect fit. I wouldn’t want to be like this all the time because people wouldn’t want to be around me, but it’d be nice to not hold back for a day.
