Meet monty the odd-looking crooked cat ambassador
Last year, we all become embroiled in following the life of Quasi, the self-coined leader of the Ugly Kitty movement. With her distinctive face, Quasi charmed hearts as she strove to push forward the case for adopting the seemingly “less adoptable” — those cats whose physical appearance or ailments might seem undesirable to some humans looking to add a cat to their world. Sadly, Quasi passed away in November of 2014. But while trawling through the vaults of Facebook I came across a cat with a seemingly similar mission: His name is Monty, and he’s heading up Crooked Cat campaign.

Adopted when he was three years old from a shelter in Denmark, Monty’s unique appearance gives him something of a smooshed — or even flat pancake — facial look. (You might also chance that he looks a little like a rabbit at times. A very noble rabbit, of course. That goes without saying.) This is caused by chromosome abnormalities, which are explained like so on his Facebook page: “Monty was born without a nasal bridge (the bone in the nose) which affects him now and then and makes him sneeze a bit.”
An occasional bout of cute kitty sneezing is one thing, but there’s also another level to Monty’s condition. “Due to his chromosome defects his bladder sometimes leaks in his sleep,” his Facebook page continues. “It is not a problem to us since it’s just some few drops and it only happens two to three times a month. This is a problem he can’t fix and we have to learn to live with.”
With good humor, Monty’s forever family adds, “This also means that I’ve become close friends with my washing machine!”
Despite his medical quirks, Monty seems to have found a blissful life in his new home. He’s settled in with his fellow feline residents Malle and Mikkel (who claims only three legs), and enjoys the classic cat trifecta of playing with string, napping, and eating. He’s also fond of dressing up as other Internet-famous felines, such as this tribute to Nyan Cat.
Monty has also bloomed into his role as an ambassador for crooked cats — those felines who “may not look perfect in everyone’s eyes!” To that end, a portion of proceeds from Monty’s merchandise — which include T-shirts, mugs, and pillows — will be donated to other shelters around the world.
“Looking different doesn’t mean you can’t be fantastic,” sums up Monty’s Facebook page. I think that’s a Monday Miracle mantra we can all salute.
